Interpreting reversed tarot: 17 cards you’d rather see upside down

Interpreting reversed tarot cards is a recommendation I often make because I believe it’s essential for getting a more complete and nuanced understanding of the situations that arise during a reading.

In this article, we’ll explore 17 tarot cards you’d definitely prefer to see reversed in a spread, due to the positive and hopeful twists they bring to your readings.

Interpreting reversed tarot

What a relief they come out reversed!

Many tarot readers, and even those receiving a reading, tend to avoid reversed cards because of the perception that they usually carry negative messages.
We could say that’s generally true – most cards are more negative when reversed. However, there are a few exceptions and several important reasons why I recommend including reversed cards in your tarot readings.

First, reading reversed cards adds depth and nuance to the interpretation, offering a wider range of meanings and possibilities.

Second, some tarot cards are, surprisingly, more positive when they show up reversed rather than upright.

Instead of delivering only challenges or negative aspects, these reversals can indicate relief, problem-solving, and opportunities for personal and spiritual growth.

You’ll prefer them reversed

A curious thing is that all the number 5 cards in the deck are more positive when reversed than when upright. All of them. And you’ll feel more joy and peace when they come up reversed in your spread.
Something similar happens with the suit of swords, where we find an overwhelming majority of cards that are more positive when reversed.

As you already know, I always recommend shuffling the cards in such a way that they appear both upright and reversed because this can lead to dramatically different interpretations.

If you ask whether you’ll get over a love that’s left you, it’s clearly better to see the 3 or 10 of swords reversed, the 5 of cups, the Tower, or the Devil reversed, rather than upright.

If you only read cards upright, you’re severely limiting the possibilities, the messages. If swords come up, for instance, you’d have no choice but to give a negative message.

Court cards

Similarly, court cards, all of them, are invariably positive when upright and negative when reversed… but don’t you think this limits the reading too much, only reading them upright?
This way, court cards will always be positive. There’s never any “bad” or inconvenient people, and in real life, not everyone is good – we all know you’ll encounter all kinds.

If, for example, you’re going into business, buying a car, renting an apartment, hiring someone, or wondering what kind of boss awaits you in your new job, wouldn’t it be a relief to know in advance if you’re dealing with difficult, negative, or bad people? It could save you quite a few headaches, right?

In short, there are endless situations where interpreting reversed tarot could be a great blessing, so I encourage you (once again) to give it a try with the cards in all their positions.

Interpreting reversed tarot

17 cards you’d rather see reversed

Important note: this is my personal list, my interpretation, and way of seeing the cards and understanding tarot. You may or may not agree with this list – maybe you’d remove a card or wish I’d included others that aren’t here. So, remember, this isn’t the ultimate truth written in stone, it’s just MY truth, which I want to share with you.

The Major Arcana

In these key figures of the deck, we find only three cards that are more favorable when reversed… let’s check them out!

The Tower

Interpretar tarot invertido (6)When the Tower appears in your tarot reading, it usually evokes images of sudden destruction, crisis, and abrupt change.
But if this card comes up reversed for you, its meaning can be more positive, suggesting you may be able to avoid a catastrophe or escape a potentially destructive situation.

Let’s look at some reasons why the reversed Tower is interpreted more favorably:

Avoiding disaster

While the upright Tower suggests that change and destruction are inevitable, happening in a dramatic and sudden way, the reversed Tower can indicate that you’ve managed to avoid disaster or that its effects will be less severe than expected. This card suggests that while change is necessary, it may be less traumatic or abrupt for you.

Opportunity to rebuild

The reversed Tower can signal that rebuilding after a collapse won’t be as challenging as you feared. It offers you the opportunity to rebuild or repair with new understanding and clearer perspective. This reversed card indicates that the destruction phase may be coming to an end, leaving space for new growth and rebuilding in your life.

Learning from past mistakes

When interpreting reversed tarot, the Tower reversed can also represent reflecting on past mistakes and gaining wisdom through difficult experiences. Instead of living through a crisis, this reversed card suggests that you may be learning from past crises and using those lessons to avoid future problems.

Releasing from oppressive situations

Sometimes, the reversed Tower indicates that the release from a restrictive or limiting situation will be less violent or disruptive than it could have been. It may be a sign that tensions that have been building will finally find a less destructive outlet for you.

Internal growth

In contrast to the outward manifestation of disasters with the upright Tower, its reversed version can focus more on internal changes and personal growth that arise in response to past challenges. This softer aspect of change can lead to deeper, personal transformation for you.
So, dear reader, while the reversed Tower doesn’t completely eliminate the possibility of upheaval or change for you, it suggests that these will be less extreme and that you may have greater control or ability to manage the situation effectively.

This interpretation offers a more hopeful perspective in the face of upcoming challenges, focusing on your recovery and learning rather than loss and destruction.

The Devil

Interpretar tarot invertido (5)When the Devil card appears reversed in your tarot reading, you can interpret it as a positive sign of personal liberation and recovery.
This Major Arcana, when upright, is typically associated with excessive materialism, addiction, and emotional or physical chains that restrict your personal freedom. But when reversed, its meanings transform into a much more encouraging message for you:

Breaking chains

The Devil card often shows figures in chains, symbolizing bondage, toxic relationships, and addictions. Reversed, this card suggests you’re breaking free from those chains, allowing yourself to be liberated from the constraints that limit your personal growth. It signifies a time of recovery and release from destructive habits or toxic relationships.

Recognizing manipulation

The reversed Devil can indicate that you’re recognizing how you’ve been manipulated or controlled by external forces, whether in relationships, at work, or through vices. This awareness is your first step toward reclaiming your personal autonomy and making healthier decisions.

Reclaiming personal power

Unlike its upright position, which can make you feel trapped by external circumstances, the reversed Devil represents reclaiming your personal power. It reflects a time when you’re taking control over your life and your decisions, escaping the grip of dependency.

Moral and ethical transformation

Typically, the Devil is associated with temptation toward morally dubious behavior. When reversed, it can symbolize an ethical transformation where you abandon old negative practices in favor of a new path that more closely aligns with your personal values and integrity.

Spiritual and emotional renewal

The reversed Devil can also mark a period of spiritual and emotional renewal, suggesting that you’re finding ways to reconnect with your true self, freeing yourself from the shadows of guilt and regret and moving toward a more positive and healthy light.

Encouraging self-awareness

This reversed position can emphasize the importance of self-awareness and introspection, indicating a period where reflection leads to important personal discoveries that can help you avoid future situations of subjugation or lack of control.
We must consider that the reversed Devil doesn’t eliminate the challenges associated with this card, but it does transform its message into one of hope and positive potential for you. It indicates a move toward breaking free from old bonds and reclaiming your personal autonomy, promoting significant spiritual and emotional growth.

The Moon

Interpretar cartas al revésWhen the Moon card appears reversed in your tarot reading, it can be seen as an indication that you’ll experience clarity and resolution of confusions or deceptions that previously clouded your perception. In its upright position, the Moon is associated with uncertainty, deception, and turbulent emotions, but when reversed, it suggests a series of positive transformations for you, which we can summarize as:

Clarity and truth revelations

The reversed Moon suggests a period where hidden truths are revealed, dispelling the fog of deception and confusion. This may refer to situations where you finally understand people’s true intentions or discover information that was previously hidden.

Overcoming fear and anxiety

While the upright Moon may indicate fear and anxiety born from uncertainty, its reversal suggests you’re confronting these fears, understanding that many of your worries were unfounded or exaggerated by your anxious mind.

Psychological awakening

The reversed card can point to a psychological awakening, where you become more aware of the subconscious dynamics and thought patterns that previously influenced your behavior in unhealthy ways.

End of confusion

The reversed Moon often represents the end of a period of mental and emotional confusion, marking a time of greater stability and understanding for you, which makes it easier for you to make more informed and confident decisions.

Emotional purification

This reversal can suggest emotional purification, freeing yourself from internal deceptions or self-deceptions that complicated your life and relationships.

Integration of the shadow

In Jungian psychology, integrating aspects of the personal “shadow” is crucial for psychological development. The reversed Moon may suggest that you’re beginning to recognize and accept these hidden or denied aspects of yourself, allowing for an integration process that leads to a more complete and balanced personality.

Progress toward the light

Finally, this reversed position can indicate a move toward the light, in a metaphorical sense, as you overcome illusions and disillusionment, guiding you toward greater illumination and understanding of your surroundings and your own inner life.
Considering all we’ve seen, the reversed Moon carries a message of hope in terms of overcoming confusion and fears for you, and an invitation to enter a phase of greater emotional and mental clarity and stability. It’s a reminder that dark periods can precede significant revelations and personal growth.

The Suit of Pentacles in Reversed Tarot Interpretation

This suit offers us only one card that’s positive when reversed: the 5. Let’s explore why.

5 of Pentacles Reversed

cartas invertidas en una lectura de tarotWhen the 5 of Pentacles appears reversed in your tarot reading, it can show a more hopeful side in every aspect, from emotional to material. It brings a message of hope and relief after a period of adversity, signaling a phase of recovery, reevaluation, and renewal of resources and relationships, offering you a perspective of greater security and stability in your life.
Here are some reasons why it’s on our list for interpreting reversed tarot:

Financial recovery

Traditionally, the upright 5 of Pentacles is associated with loss and poverty. But when it appears reversed, it can signal the end of a period of financial difficulties, indicating recovery or improvement in your financial situation.

Finding help and resources

Reversed, this card suggests that you’ll discover sources of help and support that you previously didn’t see or consider accessible. This could come in the form of financial advice, community aid, or even new income.

Overcoming isolation

While the upright 5 of Pentacles can indicate isolation and abandonment, its reversal can represent your reintegration into society or community. It could show a time when you reconnect with your support network or find new circles of help.

Renewed optimism

The reversed card often reflects a shift toward a more positive perspective, so after facing hardships and being “left out in the cold,” you may feel a renewed sense of hope and optimism about the future.

Learning from difficulties

This reversed position can indicate that you’ve learned valuable lessons from your past struggles, and this acquired wisdom can help you avoid future adversities or handle them more effectively.

Improvement in health and well-being

In some contexts, the 5 of Pentacles can also relate to health issues. In its reversed form, it may suggest an improvement in your physical or emotional condition or recovery from illness.

Appreciation for what you have

Finally, the reversal of this card can serve as a reminder to appreciate and be grateful for what you have, even if you previously felt it wasn’t enough. This change in attitude can open more doors and attract more abundance.

The Suit of Wands in Reversed Tarot Interpretation

In the suit of wands, we find two cards that are more positive when reversed: The 5 and the 10.

5 of Wands

Interpretar tarot invertido (11)When the 5 of Wands appears reversed in your reading, it can present a more positive and encouraging perspective, which we can summarize with this list:

Conflict resolution

Reversed, this card suggests that previous conflicts or disputes are coming to an end. It may indicate that tensions are easing, and those involved are finding ways to reach an agreement or better understand each other’s perspectives.

Less competition

While the upright 5 of Wands can indicate aggressive competition, its reversal can suggest a reduction in rivalry, paving the way for a more collaborative and less competitive environment, where the focus shifts toward common goals rather than individual struggles.

Focus on cooperation

This reversed card often highlights the importance of collaboration over competition, indicating a period where working together and sharing resources leads to better outcomes than opposing each other.

Clarity of direction

The reversed 5 of Wands can show that the confusion and lack of direction often associated with this card in its upright position are starting to clear. Those involved may now have a clearer vision of their goals and how to achieve them without unnecessary conflict.

Personal growth through past challenges

The reversal of this card can also reflect a period of reflection on past struggles, allowing you to learn from these experiences and grow personally, as past conflicts can offer valuable lessons that strengthen and prepare you for future challenges.

Withdrawal from a fruitless struggle

Another positive interpretation is that the reversed 5 of Wands can suggest it’s time to withdraw from struggles that lead nowhere and drain your energy, indicating that stepping away from certain conflicts may be more beneficial and lead to more lasting peace.

Restored harmony

This card can signify the restoration of harmony after a period of disagreements and tensions, indicating a return to balance and a greater understanding between parties that were previously in conflict.
Considering these points, we see that the reversed 5 of Wands brings a message of reconciliation, collaboration, and clarity after a period of rivalry and confusion, signaling a shift toward a more peaceful and productive dynamic, where previously scattered energies in conflict can now be directed toward constructive and unified goals.

10 of Wands

Interpretar tarot invertido (3)It’s important to note that the 10 of Wands, whether upright or reversed, is possibly the most dual card in the deck, so it may not entirely fit on our list of reversed tarot interpretations.
In some situations, the “letting go of burdens” implied by this card will be positive, but its sense of “not being able to handle the weight” and needing to let things go to reach your goal – at the cost of “winning” less – must also be considered. That’s why I invite you to read the entire card and draw your own conclusions.

In my personal view, I always take this card as positive when reversed, which is why I’ve included it on our list, alright?

Relief from burdens

Reversed, the 10 of Wands suggests significant relief from the responsibilities that have been overwhelming you. It may indicate that you’re finding ways to delegate tasks or that some of the burdens that were weighing on you are being lifted or resolved.

End of a stressful period

This reversed card can symbolize the end of a period loaded with stress and overwork for you, representing a time when you can finally breathe more freely, having overcome or reorganized your commitments to manage them more effectively.

Learning about limits

The reversed 10 of Wands can also teach you the importance of recognizing and respecting your own limits. It may indicate that you’ve learned a valuable lesson about not taking on more than you can handle, leading to better management of your resources and energy in the future.

Prioritization and focus

By freeing yourself from some burdens, you can now focus more effectively on the tasks that truly matter. The reversed card suggests a reevaluation of priorities that leads to a more efficient and less scattered focus.

Recovery and rest

This position of the card can also indicate a necessary period of rest and recovery after a stage of intense effort, allowing you to take a break and recharge physically and emotionally.

Optimization of efforts

The reversed 10 of Wands suggests that you’re finding smarter and more efficient ways to manage your responsibilities, which could translate into better organization or the implementation of new strategies that make it easier to handle your daily loads.

Release and rebirth

This reversed Minor Arcana card can represent a kind of rebirth after freeing yourself from oppressive obligations, symbolizing a new beginning where you feel lighter and able to move with greater freedom and purpose.
Thus, the reversed 10 of Wands is an encouraging sign that points to a reduction in your responsibilities, providing an opportunity to alleviate stress, reorganize your life, and focus on your goals with renewed vigor and clarity. This shift brings a significant improvement in your quality of life and emotional well-being.

The Suit of Cups in Reversed Tarot Interpretation

In this emotional suit, we find one more card to add to our list of reversed tarot interpretations, with 3 cards offering their best version when reversed.

4 of Cups

Interpretar tarot invertido (9)The 4 of Cups, when upright, usually represents discontent, apathy, and a lack of recognition of the opportunities available. But when this card appears reversed in your tarot reading, it can signal a positive shift in how you’re perceiving your emotional situation and relationships, and here’s why:

Reevaluation of opportunities

Reversed, the 4 of Cups suggests that you’re starting to recognize and appreciate the opportunities you previously ignored or dismissed. It indicates a change in your attitude, where you’re open to new possibilities and experiences that can enrich your life.

Emerging from emotional stagnation

This reversed card symbolizes awakening from a state of apathy or disinterest, showing that you’re moving past a phase of emotional indifference and are ready to re-engage with your emotional life and relationships in a more active and positive way.

Greater appreciation for what you have

The reversed 4 of Cups can represent a moment of gratitude for the blessings already present in your life, encouraging you to focus on what you have rather than what’s missing, which can lead to greater satisfaction and happiness.

Regaining motivation

Reversed, the 4 of Cups encourages you to regain the motivation and enthusiasm for projects or interests you had previously set aside, making it an excellent time to revisit what truly excites you and invest more energy and time into it.

Emotional renewal

This card can symbolize an emotional renewal, where you free yourself from old wounds or resentments and find a new inner peace, which can be especially liberating if you’ve been stuck in feelings of dissatisfaction or melancholy.
As we can see, the reversed 4 of Cups brings a message of hope and renewal for you, inviting you to seize present opportunities, revitalize your relationships, and find joy in the aspects of your life you had previously overlooked. This shift in perspective can be deeply liberating and transformative, offering you new reasons to be emotionally engaged with your life and your loved ones.

Reversed, this card suggests that you’re beginning to overcome the grief or sadness that has weighed you down, signaling that you’re finding ways to move past the past and look forward to what’s ahead.

This reversed card highlights the importance of learning from your mistakes and painful experiences. Instead of being trapped in regret, it motivates you to extract valuable lessons from your challenges and use that knowledge to make wiser choices in the future.

By clearing away illusions and focusing on tangible reality, it prepares you to move forward more decisively and effectively toward achieving your goals, serving as a call to action based on well-founded decisions and letting go of what doesn’t serve your true purpose.

The 8 of Swords, when upright, generally symbolizes a situation of limitation and entrapment, where you feel there’s no way out, restricted by external circumstances or your own thoughts.

When this card appears reversed, its meaning can be much more encouraging, and its presence alone justifies why interpreting reversed tarot is a practice you should strongly consider:

Release from restrictions

Reversed, the 8 of Swords suggests a release from the restrictions that you previously felt unable to overcome. It indicates that you’re finding ways to break the ties that bind you, allowing you to move with more freedom.

Mental clarity

This card reversed suggests that you’re overcoming the confusion and self-deception that may have clouded your judgment. Now, you can see things more clearly and are making more informed, conscious decisions.

Overcoming analysis paralysis

Usually, the upright 8 of Swords indicates being stuck due to overthinking or fear, but when reversed, it shows that you’re moving beyond indecision or fear, taking practical steps to change your situation.

Regaining personal control

This reversed 8 points to a time when you’re regaining control over your life and your decisions. You no longer feel like a victim of circumstances but are actively seeking solutions and ways to improve your situation.

Recognizing your own capabilities

The reversed 8 of Swords can also represent a moment when you recognize your self-imposed limitations and work to overcome them. Now, you’re discovering that many of the barriers in your life were created by you, and you’re ready to break them down.

Greater autonomy and self-confidence

This card reversed encourages you to believe in yourself more and in your ability to change your life. You’re gaining the confidence needed to act autonomously, without overly relying on the approval, validation, or guidance of others.

Escaping negative situations

The 8 of Swords reversed can indicate that you’re escaping from an oppressive or negative environment that has been holding you back. You’re taking steps to free yourself and move forward toward a more positive and healthy future.
Given all of this, you can understand why I value this card so much… the reversed 8 of Swords is a powerful reminder that you have the strength to free yourself from the chains that are holding you back. It’s a moment of personal and mental rebirth, where solutions and the path forward become clear and accessible, encouraging you to embrace this newfound freedom and use it to create a more promising and fulfilling future.
