The Hierophant or The Pope in tarot

The Hierophant is the 5th card in the tarot deck.

The Hierophant is a static Major Arcana card with a broad but precise meaning. The Hierophant in the upright position represents religion, group and social identification, conformity, tradition, and beliefs. Reversed, the card represents restriction, withheld temptations, and challenging the established norms and status quo.

Card Correspondences:

Kabbalistically, this card is associated with the element Air, the Hebrew letter Heth, and the number 5.
Esoterically, it is linked to Taurus, the planet Jupiter, and the season of winter.

In numerology, it represents the number 5: it signifies the pursuit of knowledge and the path of wisdom, the sum of 2 + 3 (duality + harmony and balance of opposites).

Card Description:

The Hierophant is a significant Major Arcana, also known as The High Priest, The Hierophant, Chiron, or The Shaman, and is the masculine counterpart of The High Priestess.
The card is depicted by a religious figure sitting within a formal church setting.
They wear three elaborate robes representing the three worlds. The crown they wear has three levels.

Their right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing, the same hand that The Magician raises, but while The Magician manifests power in the material realm, the Hierophant channels this power through society (as seen in world religions).

The triple scepter is a symbol of their dominion over the three worlds. The crossed keys represent balance between the conscious and subconscious mind and the ability to unlock the mysteries of the unconscious.

Before them kneel two Initiates. The Hierophant’s task is to lead these two initiates into the church so they can take on their designated roles.
This symbolizes entry into all types of institutions that involve a shared group identity, including schools, clubs, teams, businesses, and societies.

The Hierophant and its meaning
The Hierophant and its meaning

General Meaning:

The Hierophant has a lot to do with “doing the right thing.” You might be grappling with a problem and unsure about what the “right” thing is to solve the situation.
While what is right may vary based on our own moral, social, and cultural values, this often means the answer you’re seeking is something you already know or lies within you.

There is a universal sense of right, and the appearance of this card suggests that beyond your personal beliefs, you should follow this universal right.

The Hierophant represents spiritual values, guiding you to follow established norms and avoid challenging the rules. It suggests that, for now, group support and some form of ritualization in your life might benefit you.

Your rituals are something to hold onto right now, whether it’s going to church or meeting up with friends for a movie every Saturday.

This card generally indicates a positive or favorable outcome, and if negative, it will be final. While it shows a good result, it also indicates that it will require significant willpower and determination to achieve it.

The Hierophant may represent you or another person in a reading, but it certainly indicates that the person’s values are high and noble. There’s wisdom and great balance, along with a cultivated intellect. This person is capable of teaching and advising with ideas that are always moral and backed by deep intellectual insight.

In a situation, The Hierophant shows us that the matter at hand is serious and stable. It’s very positive when it comes to relationships or business partnerships.

This situation will always be evaluated with the common good in mind—prioritizing the moral and social well-being over the material. This card can also predict the formation of a partnership, whether in business or marriage, depending on the context, even hinting at a birth.

Finally, the card suggests you will always find a solution, either through your own means or with the help of others, as you bring order to the apparent chaos.

It can also indicate that what is unfolding or happening in your life is part of a prewritten destiny, something that had to happen, even if you don’t yet understand the causes or reasons.

Work:

A mentor or teacher you’ve been needing may appear in your life now… or perhaps you yourself are being called to be a teacher or mentor to someone else.
This is a great time to get involved with groups, even if you don’t consider yourself a “group person.” You’ll find you have much to learn from them in a positive way.

Work should be going well thanks to this collaborative attitude—there’s great power in being organized and achieving results.

It’s time to improve how you deal with others, always focusing on reflection and balance, and achieving results through the idea that “unity is strength,” fostering a calm attitude that sticks to rules and regulations.

The way you interact with bosses, coworkers, or subordinates should be unique and individual, seeing others as people, each a complex universe in themselves.

The card predicts excellent achievements for anything involving partnerships or teamwork.

Love:

Romance is likely to go well when The Hierophant appears, although in a somewhat traditional way. These energies will work best for you if you behave as expected.
It also means putting yourself in the other person’s shoes. Now isn’t the time to go against the flow or break with the established order, so depending on the context, it could suggest that divorce isn’t the right choice at this moment.

On the other hand, it could indicate a new union, marriage, or wedding, the birth or adoption of a child. It’s always about a protective love—paternal or maternal, depending on the case—and it could signify a relationship with an older person, someone intellectual, with much acquired experience and deep spiritual understanding.

Finances:

This is a time to play by the established rules and keep your feet on the ground, following normal and traditional methods to manage your money. Seek advice from specialists and professionals who handle money wisely.
This is a good time for investments, as long as they are conservative and stable. Stick to safe bets. Now isn’t the time to take risks with money or go for unusual investments like stocks or bonds.

High-risk investments, which often yield the greatest returns, should be avoided for the moment. You may see money coming in, but it will be through traditional means, likely the result of your own work and effort.

Health:

If you have any health issues, discipline, order, and commitment will be essential for recovery.
It’s necessary to consult or be treated by specialists, so, where possible, seek out the best in the field, an eminent figure who can diagnose and treat your condition properly.

There could be problems with the cervical vertebrae, due to rigid postures, both physical and emotional.

Spirituality:

You are very concerned with spirituality right now (even if you don’t subscribe to a “traditional” religious belief).
Take regular time, even if you don’t attend a church or temple, to calm yourself and allow your spirit this regular break for contemplation, meditation, or prayer.

It’s crucial to find this oasis regularly to work through your concerns.

The Hierophant Reversed:

The Hierophant when reversed
The Hierophant when reversed

General Meaning:

The Hierophant reversed signifies restriction, withheld temptations, challenging the established norms and the status quo.
There’s confusion about what is right, and others may not understand why you’ve taken this rebellious, questioning attitude.

You may feel a deep sense of limitation in your life, whether imposed by general rules, work conditions, family, or a relationship, and as a result, you may feel like you’ve surrendered control.

This can sometimes come off as teenage rebellion, but it’s not necessarily that. Sometimes, you simply reach a point in life where you need to reevaluate things, whether sooner or later.

Whenever this reversed card shows up, your attitude is one of rebellion, and in some cases, it can signal issues with authority figures, a paternal figure, or perhaps unfair working conditions or attitudes from a boss or supervisor.

In certain contexts, if this figure doesn’t represent you but someone else, it indicates that their power and the rules they’ve established are strong and influential, and you may have no choice but to accept and operate under their authority.

It can also indicate that you’re feeling pressure from a group with which you no longer feel aligned, and you’re beginning to question their true value or purposes.

Work:

The Hierophant reversed suggests discontent or disagreements with your job, the authorities, coworkers, or even business partners or advisors working with you.
It encourages caution, a little distrust, and suggests you take things with a grain of salt, as there may be things going on behind the scenes that you are unaware of.

Love:

The rebellion and discontent represented by The Hierophant reversed speaks of a situation where there’s fatigue, and you may feel like breaking away from your usual routines and roles, either with small changes that disrupt your routine or with drastic changes like a parallel relationship.
You’re tired and ready to make innovations to change the situation, and while this card initially encourages action, you need to be cautious, reflect, and not act purely on impulse.

Since The Hierophant is directly related to the traditional way of doing things and respecting established norms, pushing too far could result in serious mistakes that may end the relationship.

Money/Finances:

Saving and caution is the main message of this card. The Hierophant reversed means that you’re trying out new things, taking risks, and going against the traditional approach, which could be a mistake.
It’s time to keep your feet on the ground, stick to what’s established, and follow the usual and traditional methods for managing your money. Seek advice from specialists or experienced people who can guide you.

It’s a good time for investments, provided they’re conservative and stable. It’s not a time for risky ventures or gambling.

Health:

The digestive system may present some issues, and The Hierophant also suggests that now is not the best time to pursue pregnancy.
Since this is a card of questioning and rebellion, it advises you not to settle for the first diagnosis and to seek multiple opinions. It also suggests considering alternative, non-traditional medicines, which may provide good results in some cases.

Given the potential digestive issues, you may need to make changes in your eating habits to improve your health and well-being.

Spirituality:

Just like with The Hierophant upright, the indication here is that you should focus more on your spirituality now.
As this is a phase of rebellion and opposition, you may not feel inclined to participate in group activities, whether it’s church, a temple, or any other spiritual gathering involving people.

However, you should still make time regularly for your spirit, even in solitude, as this will help you reflect and ground yourself, allowing you to reevaluate things with calm and objectivity.
