The infinity symbol (whose true name is Lemniscate) is a geometric and mathematical representation of the eternal and infinite nature of energy.
Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it simply continues moving endlessly. The meanings of this symbol remind us of the infinite nature of our spirit, as well as our thoughts.
The infinity symbol in the tarot deck
When this symbol appears in our readings and draws our attention, it may be a message that we need to consider the consequences of our thoughts and actions, whose effects can be infinite.
In a tarot reading, the infinity symbol encourages us to consider how divine power expresses itself, or wants to express itself, through our actions. It invites us to bring ancient or higher wisdom into our awareness.
The Lemniscate tells us it’s time to look beyond the mundane and personal ego to gain deeper insight and understanding or to connect our task to a higher spiritual level.
Interpretations we can give to the Lemniscate
When applied to symbolic meaning in our tarot readings, the infinity symbol simply connects us with the “infinite and eternal” nature of our spirit and our “thought” processes.
On a more basic level, its interpretation suggests that before we take action on our plans and ideas, we should reflect on the effect of such action, which could snowball into a domino effect that we might not be able to control, continuing indefinitely, “ad infinitum.”
We could also interpret it as a sign that perhaps we have set our goals so high that no matter how hard we try, they’ll always be out of reach. Maybe it’s time to replan and rethink.
For example, for couples, it’s a romantic reminder of infinite love and understanding between lovers or spouses. For a family, it symbolizes lasting love, care, and protection for a home and loved ones.
The infinity symbol represents all of time: past, present, and future, centered in the present moment of “NOW.”
Everything that ever happened is happening now, and everything that will ever happen is also governed by the collective actions taken now.
Thus, we create our present from our past and our future from our present, and the action we take now represents our Karma and shapes our destiny.
Therefore, we can deduce that in interpretations of the Lemniscate during a tarot reading, the symbol represents the infinity of energies.
This means that energies cannot be created or destroyed but can continue endlessly through both light and darkness, happiness or sadness, peace or conflict, good or bad.
When a card bearing the infinity symbol appears, success depends on the actions the seeker takes right now in the present and on the corrective measures they take while navigating the path forward through the obstacles they may face.
Cards featuring the infinity symbol
The Rider-Waite Tarot
This symbol is featured on five cards in the Rider-Waite deck, but it appears clearly and unmistakably as a Lemniscate on only three of them: in the Major Arcana cards of The Magician, Strength, and in the Minor Arcana, the 2 of Pentacles.
In The World card and the 2 of Cups, it appears more figuratively or metaphorically.
The Magician
Located above their head, the Lemniscate represents The Magician’s connection to universal principles and their infinite spiritual potential, reminding us that we must tap into universal and eternal truths to transform ourselves.
The Magician is intimately familiar with this knowledge that energy transforms and is never lost, and they understand that the energy of their thoughts always leads to infinite consequences.
Some decks depict an additional Lemniscate at The Magician’s throat, symbolizing the infinite power of the spoken word.
Strength
In Strength, also located above the woman’s head, the infinity symbol connects masculine and feminine energies for an integrated and total strength.
2 of Pentacles
In the 2 of Pentacles, the Lemniscate represents the endless challenges that life presents to us and the possibilities and abilities we have to find balance and manage or resolve them.
The World
In The World card, the Lemniscate doesn’t appear as the classic infinity symbol, shaped like a sideways “8,” but is instead illustrated in the ribbon that ties and holds, both above and below, the large laurel wreath (or mandorla) surrounding the female figure.
This symbol, in this card, refers to the infinite nature of humanity. We are always immortal, and our spirit only progresses to ever-higher levels of transformation.
It also serves as an emblem of the infinite nature of our thoughts and the lasting impact they leave on the Universe. We are all connected; we are all infinite.
2 of Cups
In the 2 of Cups, as in The World card, it can be seen figuratively, where the snake coiled around the caduceus forms this infinity symbol in some way.
Here, the Lemniscate essentially represents the intertwining of masculine and feminine forces, the union of opposites.
This reflects that in a partnership, both union and individuation can and should occur within the structure of the relationship.
