The Moon and its light-and-shadow message in tarot

The Moon is the major arcana card numbered 18

The Moon is almost dreamlike in its representation, and its meaning is quite clear whether it appears upright or reversed in a reading. The Moon is the card of the unconscious and everything that happens there.

Card correspondences:

Kabbalistically, this card is logically associated with the Moon, the letter Tzade, and the number 90.
Esoterically, it is associated with the sign of Pisces, the element of Water, and the season of winter.

In numerology, it represents the number 18 and 9 (18 = 1+8 = 9).

Card imagery description:

The Moon is the card of intuition, dreams, and the unconscious. The moon shines with the light it reflects from the sun, but this light is dim, uncertain, and only faintly illuminates our path as we journey toward higher consciousness.
The lagoon at the bottom of the card represents the subconscious mind, and the crayfish emerging from the water symbolizes the early stages of consciousness development.

This creature also represents the often disturbing images that rise from our inner depths, while the dog and the wolf at the start of the path represent our dual nature—our domesticated self and the wild aspects of our mind and spirit.

The path passes between two stone towers and leads toward the mountains in the distance, symbolizing the journey into the unconscious.

General meaning:

This card symbolizes illusion, fear, anxiety, insecurity, the subconscious, and the shadow side of ourselves.
It’s a time of confusion you must escape from. Your past heavily influences your present, and if you don’t overcome it, renew yourself, and make changes, your future will darken and become uncertain.

The Moon is a card of fear that can paralyze you, but you need to confront it and turn things around.

The Moon card is a great representation of “The Shadow” and “The Mirror,” two definitions from Carl Jung that refer to the darkness of our unconscious. If we don’t bring this darkness into the light, it will continue to affect our lives.

In the shadow, we find our instincts, hidden passions, and things we often can’t name but project onto others.

This is “The Mirror,” where we attribute our own emotional or moral flaws to others, because we can’t accept them within ourselves. What we criticize and accuse others of, says Jung, are flaws that actually belong to us.

The Moon represents deception and illusion. Although the moon’s light illuminates, it’s not full, and what we see may be distorted. Depending on the other cards in the reading, if they are negative, it indicates that things aren’t what they seem, and you need to be cautious to see the reality for what it is.

If the other cards are positive, The Moon may suggest that you are letting your imagination run wild, exaggerating things, and seeing situations that don’t exist beyond your mind.

This card can also point to deeply buried emotions, mainly related to fears from your past that are now affecting your present and future, holding you back.

This process is undoubtedly challenging, but you must bring this hidden information to your conscious mind so that you can resolve and overcome it.

On the positive side, despite the moon’s dim light (despite the lack of clarity in your present and future), you are still walking the path. You may not be entirely sure, but you’re moving forward. This card is linked to intuition, and it’s that intuition that is pushing you onward.

If this card appears as a final outcome, it generally suggests that the result won’t be favorable.

If The Moon defines a person, it suggests they are problematic, full of insecurities, with conflicts following them or a tendency to create them.

It may also suggest deception, that they aren’t what they claim to be, and that they put on a façade. Their deep fears condition them, and they are easily manipulated by others.

Representing a situation, The Moon indicates conflict and anxiety. There’s usually poor communication, interference from others, gossip, and rumors. Fears dominate, and these must be addressed for things to be resolved.

Love:

In love, this card suggests there will be romantic moments, full of sensuality, “strolls under the moonlight,” but there’s not much commitment. Romance takes priority, but not the commitment that comes with it.
The relationship will have ups and downs, repeated changes, but even within this circle where nothing seems defined, the romance won’t be lacking. It’s a highly emotional time, and it’s best not to make assumptions or try to box the relationship into rigid definitions.

It’s what it is—emotional and sensual—but if you’re looking for something defined or concrete, you won’t find it. It’s also not a good time to rush into or leave a relationship.

Work:

Regarding work, this is a time to seriously reconsider things. Maybe you’re fooling yourself into thinking this job will give you more than it actually will, or perhaps it’s not as bad as it seems and your perception is off.
It’s about seeing clearly what aligns with your needs, expectations, and passions. This isn’t the time to make rash decisions. Wait for the night to be replaced by daylight before making important choices.

Money:

In terms of money and finances, the message is similar. Don’t make hasty or drastic decisions. Be mindful of saving, and avoid investments that seem brilliant and promising but may not be.
Remember, this card often speaks of deception in perceptions. Anything in progress, plans, or ideas will need to wait a bit longer.

Health:

For health, this card suggests there could be issues related to the reproductive system, as it is a card connected to sensuality and pleasures. It also suggests consulting a doctor if you have doubts, as your intuition about what’s wrong may be misleading.
Since this card is associated with the night, there may be a tendency to consume or increase alcohol, drugs, or other substances, so be careful not to overindulge or cross legal boundaries.

Spirituality:

This is a deeply spiritual moment and a good time for profound reflections. It’s a time of openness, though also of confusion.
You may feel disoriented, and while it’s good to seek guidance, don’t ignore your own intuition, which is heightened right now.

Pay attention to your thoughts and feelings; many answers may come to you out of nowhere, in a vision.

The Moon in reversed position:

General meaning:

This reversed card has both a positive and a negative side. It represents the release of fear, the overcoming of sadness, and the resolution of confusion.
All the confusion the upright Moon brought is now dissipating. The Moon has reversed, and its dim light is now giving way to the dawn.

This is undoubtedly a good thing, as it means that all the tough moments and anguish you’ve experienced will now be lifted like a veil.

Everything that was hidden is finally coming to light, bringing you a sense of relief, but also some problems.

Since this card is connected to deep, secret things, it’s possible that whatever was being hidden is now exposed for everyone to see. While this provides relief, it may also bring challenges.

It’s a time of great intuition, trusting what you feel and believe. Your inner voice is now louder than anything else, and you’d do well to follow and listen to it. The dissatisfaction with your life or certain situations that have been holding you back is now giving way to a liberating feeling, one of deep transformation.

Maybe it’s time to leave a relationship that’s been suffocating you, change jobs even when it seemed impossible, or dare to reveal a hidden part of yourself, like confessing your love for someone you “shouldn’t,” coming out as LGBTQ+, or realizing you can’t stay in a marriage and need to explore the world on your own. Of course, these are just examples.

The cost of this liberation and overcoming fear may be high, but you already know that, and you’re ready to follow your heart, instincts, and inner self.

Love:

In love, this can point to issues caused by deep insecurities, emotional confusion, or the duality and ambiguity of feelings. These may lead to breakups.
If things are going well in your relationship, it might just be a phase of confusion, but if you’ve been having problems, they may worsen. If you’ve been considering ending things, this card suggests the breakup will happen, and if you’re single, you may have some romantic flings, but nothing serious.

This card can also indicate LGBTQ+ identities in some cases, depending on the other cards in the reading.

Work:

At work, there’s a strong chance of a change, not because a better opportunity appears, but because you’ve finally gathered the courage to pursue something different, following your true calling. Perhaps your current job has simply worn you out.
There’s likely gossip, differing opinions, disagreements, and clashes with supervisors or coworkers. If that’s the case, you’ll either move on or, to overcome the crisis, take a neutral stance, doing your work correctly without engaging in any arguments. Patience and self-control are key.

If you’re waiting for a job, the long wait is almost over, although many confusing options might appear. Be careful not to get dazzled by false promises.

Money:

In terms of money and finances, the card advises caution. Even though the worst is behind you, you still need to be careful. Try to save and avoid unnecessary expenses.
It’s still not the right time for investments, and as with the rest of the reading, you must be especially careful not to be lured in by tempting promises that could cause more harm than good.

Health:

For health, take special care to avoid depression. It may be caused by the major changes or transformations you’ve gone through or are still going through. Physical ailments could stem from tension at work, insecurity, or conflicts in your relationship or family.
All of this is temporary, but you must combat negative thoughts and avoid letting them bring you down. The sun will rise again—hold on to that.

Spirituality:

Despite the general conflict and confusion, spiritually, this is a significant moment for you. You’ve gained clarity in one or more aspects of your life, and you’ve regained confidence in yourself, your intuition, and your inner voice.
This is a very positive thing, and it will sustain you as the moon gives way to the light of the sun. Continue exploring yourself, discovering, reaffirming, or revealing things from your deep inner self.
