The Tarot: What is it really, and how does it work?

The Tarot is of ancient and unknown origin

The Tarot is much more than just fortune-telling. No one can definitively say how it works, but it has been used for thousands of years to ask questions about the future and get all sorts of answers about existence.

The first thing I have to say is that tarot isn’t bad. It’s not witchcraft, it’s not Satanism, it’s not sorcery or some kind of superstition, it’s not magic or anything supernatural. Unfortunately, movie clichés have painted a dark picture of tarot: It’s the typical scene where a desperate young woman enters a shabby room lit only by a few candles, with an untrustworthy and unpleasant old woman who dramatically places the Death card on the table, causing panic in the girl while ominous music plays in the background. That’s far from the truth, starting with the fact that the Death card doesn’t signify anyone’s death.

Everything is interconnected, nothing happens by coincidence or chance. There’s a cause-and-effect relationship that tarot, like other divination arts, can tap into. It can reveal, interpret, and show the threads of this synchronicity. What we who study tarot can say for sure is that it simply works.

The Tarot offers possible answers to your life. It highlights your joys, problems, conflicts, and hopes. It identifies personality and life patterns, spots areas where change could steer you in a better direction, and suggests how you can move toward success or your desired goal. The cards reveal what needs to be seen; they show you what Spirit needs you to know. It’s more than just “fortune-telling.” By understanding your situation objectively and learning the best path forward, you can create your absolute best future. If you don’t like what you see, the Tarot gently guides you, showing how to change the outcome and create the best possible future for yourself. The Tarot is wise and honest, serving to protect and guide us, always with our highest good in mind.

The cards in tarot don’t predict the future. They just show a pattern, a guide, a trend. The tarot cards don’t create the events or circumstances of the future that we’ll live through no matter what; they just point to possibilities and show variables that may influence the outcomes you reach. So, the verdict of tarot cards is not set in stone. Everything can change at any moment through free will. The cards will tell you what the possible scenarios are based on whether or not you use that free will, make changes, or become aware of your situation.

There are thousands of tarot decks, or types of cards, but essentially, if a deck is labeled “Tarot,” it’s likely based on one of three main decks: – Tarot of Marseille (creator unknown) – Rider-Waite Tarot (created by Arthur Edward Waite) – Thoth Tarot (created by Aleister Crowley)

This website, and I personally, use the Rider-Waite deck because it’s the most well-known and the deck that ninety percent of tarot decks use as a source of inspiration. There are tarot decks and oracle cards, decks with 34 cards and decks with 88, but the ones we’ll describe and use here, as well as for any readings requested, will be the Rider-Waite tarot deck, with its 78 cards, 22 of which are Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana.

Beyond the type or design of the deck, or the number of cards, tarot carries the same meanings because it presents archetypes and life experiences that are universal to all humanity, regardless of what the creator of a deck has chosen to convey. In our Rider-Waite tarot deck, we have 22 Major Arcana, which deal with long-term things, bigger and more significant events, over which you may have little to no control. The Minor Arcana represent more everyday situations, things happening in the short term that are more measurable and immediate. The 56 Minor Arcana are divided into four suits: Swords, Pentacles, Wands, and Cups, numbered from 1 to 10, plus four cards representing human figures, called the court cards: the Page, Knight, Queen, and King. You can check out the descriptions and meanings of the Major and Minor Arcana, as well as each suit, in the corresponding links:

The position of the cards is also important, whether they’re upright or completely reversed. While upright cards are often seen as having a more positive meaning, that’s not always the case. With many cards, it’s when they’re reversed that their meaning is more encouraging, while upright, they may have a more negative connotation. So, don’t be alarmed when cards come out “upside down.”

I could go on for hours about the wonderful world of tarot, but to sum it up, I can say that it’s an amazing tool for personal growth, clarity, and insight. It’s a powerful symbolic system of personality patterns (archetypes) that provides deeper clarity about your life. It’s a connection to universal wisdom and higher guidance. Tarot is wonderful for accessing inner wisdom, creating personal transformation, and is a bridge to the subconscious mind. In essence, it’s a mirror to the soul, an incredible source of knowledge that all of us who use it, learn from it, and try to understand it, have come to deeply respect.
